About

Elemental Eating alchemizes ancestry, diaspora, and story through food.

This project is the vision of two friends of Japanese ancestry, Marilou Carrera and Candace Kita. It recognizes and honors their own complex, diasporic histories and origins; their tangled and evolving relationships to food; and their desires to commune and transform through eating and storytelling. It combines the sacred and mundane. The projects identity is rooted in the traditional Japanese spiritual elements -- fire, earth, water, air, and ether -- as guiding themes, understanding that food is as vital and necessary as the elements that sustain us.

The shapes directly correlate to the five Japanese alchemic elements. Each playing a part in the themes of cooking and creating food.
Fire is represented by the flame, cooking/creating with heat to transform an ingredient
Air is represented by the spiral, breathing and the nature of air going in and out of a passageway, air is a natural way to cool and temper a dish
Water is represented by a open circle, in reference to the cyclical nature of water and how it can accomadate any shape or container it finds
Earth is represented by a solid amorphous shape, in reference to molding and shaping with Earth’s natural resources, in terms of cooking it could mean fruits/vegetables
Ether is represented by a black shape, that it fills all the spaces where light doesn’t enter, it also represents the carbon from which all things originate from
